  • Woodlea's Thursday Picnic

    Thu 04 Jun 2015
Today was the start of 'Woodlea's Thursday Picnics'. The sun was out and the children were all excited for the first of many this half term.
All the children had the choice to buy a picnic lunch or they could eat their own sandwiches, brought in from home.
It was great to see the children outside, particularly because the sun was shining. They ate their picnics with friends from across the school and continued to play games until the end of lunch.
Lets hope that the weather next Thursday is as good as today.
  • British Week

    Fri 22 May 2015
Woodlea Junior School – British Week
During the last week at Woodlea Junior School, the children have had a British Week. They have been looking at all things ‘British’; the culture, landmarks, traditions, monarchy and British Values.
The children were asked to complete some homework with their parents. The variety and quality of this has been of a very high standard and their imagination has shown no limits. There has been some wonderful pieces brought into school – ranging from sculpture, art work, ICT to models of ‘The Coronation Crown’. A parent commented that they had thoroughly enjoyed working with their child at home and said that they too had learnt more about ‘British Values’ in society today.
As part of the week, the year 6 children had a visit from a ‘Community Court’, where they had an opportunity to participate in a mock trial, playing the various roles of the court officials.
Traditional British sports and their rules were taught including cricket, lawn tennis and rugby. Groups of children looked at and researched landmarks from around the British Isles, using maths sessions and co-ordinates to locate them.
The children have produced fact files, newspaper reports, poetry and leaflets which contain much of the new learning taken place during the week.
The week culminated with the children wearing red, white and blue. They performed and shared in a special assembly, which parents were invited to, some of the work from during the week. The climax of which was the children’s performance of ‘The National Anthem’. Mrs Strickland said, ‘I was really pleased with the respectful way in which the children sang the National Anthem’.
The highlight of the week for the children and staff was a ‘Street Party’, which was indoors, due to the weather. All the children had a party lunch and ate together, listening to British music and celebrating the week.
Mrs Shorrocks was very proud of all of the children during the week and the way in which they fully immersed in their new learning.

  • Woodlea Junior School’s Tom Arkwright placed 6 Nationally in ‘British School’s Biathlon Championships’.

    Thu 30 Apr 2015
In October 2014, Tom Arkwright, a pupil at Woodlea Junior School, competed in the British Modern Biathlon Championships for the North West Region. He represented Leyland Barracudas at this event. This was held at Salt Ayre in Lancaster and consisted of 2 disciplines; an 800m run and a 50m swim. This was Toms first biathlon, as he has normally only competes in the swimming pool. To his amazement, he not only won the swim discipline for his age group, but won the whole competition, making Tom the ‘North West Biathlon Champion 2014 – 2015’.
Winning this competition meant that he qualified for the ‘British Modern Biathlon Championships’ held in Birmingham. Success continued for Tom and he yet again won the swim discipline for his age group and was in 13th placed overall in Great Britain. Following this event, Tom was ranked 9th nationally for his age group.
Due to Tom’s success in that competition, he was automatically entered in the British Modern School’s Biathlon. These championships were held in March this year and took place at the Olympic Park in London. At this competition, Tom represented his own school, Woodlea Junior School in Leyland. Tom completed his run and then swam his freestyle race in the Olympic pool. Tom was delighted after completing the race when he looked up at the scoreboard and saw his name in bright lights as the winner on the score board.
There was over 100 boys competing in his age group. Overall he won the swim discipline and was placed 6th in the actual championships, which earned him a trophy and a medal, and was presented these by a member of ‘Team GB athletes’.
Tom mainly focusses on swimming at his local club, Leyland Barracudas, who introduced him to the Biathlon initially. He has already won many gold medals and this year competed at county level.
His parents, club and school are extremely proud of Tom and of what he has achieved at all levels in his varying competitions and wish him further luck in his future sporting career.
  • Duck Rescue

    Fri 24 Apr 2015
Stranded in the 'Quad' in the centre of Woodlea, was a duck and her 14 ducklings. Staff and the children in school were very concerned and wanted to help rescue them. They took advice from the RSPB. The school was told that inorder for them to be rescued safely, the duck and her ducklings must be moved together and during daylight.
The rescue mission took place. Mrs Smith, Miss Fyfe, Mrs Porter and Mrs Atherton safely put the ducks in a box and drove to Shruggs Wood where the duck and her ducklings were released.
From the pictures below you will see their safe release!
