Dear Parents/Guardians
 
On behalf of the Governors I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Jillian Shorrocks has been appointed as Headteacher at Woodlea Junior School.   Mrs Shorrocks will take up her new post full time in September 2015.  In the meantime Mrs Shorrocks and I will continue to work together to ensure we deliver high standards of learning and wellbeing for all of our pupils.
 
I am sure you will all join the governors and I in congratulating Mrs Shorrocks, and I hope you will support her and her staff as they continue to bring success and achievements to Woodlea in years to come.

Our athletics team from year 5&6 progressed through to the Area Finals in Penwortham from the Leyland competition at Worden High School. The team performed brilliantly on the day and finished in the top 10 schools. Congratulations to all the team for their fantastic effort, enthusiasm and behaviour on the day. A special thanks to Mrs Bell who motivated and encouraged the team during their field events. We look forward to the next competition. 

FRIDAY FAVOURITES
 
 

Dear Parents,
School Dinners and Friday Favourites
Children at Woodlea are offered a hot daily dinner at lunch time, which needs to be booked and paid for in advance, at £2 a day. Children can choose to have just a meal on a Friday, as in a ‘Friday Favourite’. This needs ordering and paying for by the Friday before as this enables Mrs Leggett the time to order the food. Menus are available in the school entrance and on our website. We hope that this change makes it easier all round?!
There have recently been a number of children who have not brought in a packed lunch from home for a variety of reasons. Children will always be offered a jacket potato or a sandwich, made by the kitchen. This meal will need to be charged at £2 and parents will be notified that day.
Birthday Lunches
During the month when it is your child’s birthday, they will be invited to have a special lunch in school. For children who are on sandwiches, they have the opportunity to buy a lunch for £2 and sit on the birthday table.
We are very fortunate at Woodlea to have a ‘Food Council’, where the children have representatives from each class who meet regularly with Mrs Leggett and people from Lancashire Catering. Below are some of the upcoming lunch events that will be taking place during the next two terms. For these events, there will be separate information sent out, closer to the dates.

Can I first of all thank all of you who attended my assembly on Wednesday and those who have sent their kind wishes for the future.  It has been a great pleasure to have worked with all of you and your fantastic children during the time that I have been Headteacher at Woodlea Junior School.   As I leave to take up another headship at a Primary School in Preston I know that I am leaving the school in safe hands.  I am sure that the staff and Governors will continue with the good progress we have already made and wish all at Woodlea the very best for the future. 
 
I would like to thank you for your support over the last couple of years.  It has been a privilege to be a part of your children’s lives and I have loved watching them all grow and succeed.  There has not been a day that has passed that they haven’t made me laugh, smile and feel proud.
 
I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and a fantastic new year.

MINISQUASH Primary Schools Event - 10 Dec 2014

FIRST EVER in Lancashire and the North West of England!

 
On Wednesday 10^th December “Leyland Lions Junior Squash & Racketball Club” held a “South Ribble Primary Schools Minisquash Event” at Leyland Leisure Centre.  Great Success story thanks to so many!
 
It’s the first time that a Squash & Racketball Club in Lancashire and the North West of England has held such an event!
 
The four primary schools - Leyland Methodist, St Catherine’s, Lostock Hall Community and Woodlea took part.  Four children (2 girls/2 boys) represented their schools.

Quotes from the schools:

• “The Kids loved it”.  
• 8 year old boy “I really enjoyed it. The afternoon was great and lots of FUN”.

Minisquash (5-10 year olds) offers an ideal introduction to squash.  This exciting game fits the needs of younger children and is played using specialised equipment designed to help children achieve maximum success.
