  • World Book Day 2017

    Tue 21 Feb 2017

    21st February 2017

Spooky World Book Day Friday 3rd March 2017

    Dear Parent/Carer,

As you may be aware, National World Book Day is on 2.3.17, however Woodlea will be celebrating on Friday 3rd March 2017.

We have a fantastic day planned for the pupils, which school is running alongside Spook Teaching Ltd. The workshops are based on characters and storylines from ‘The Spooks’ series of books by Joseph Delaney http://www.spookteaching.com/

    The day will involve:

    • A launch assembly at 9.05 – parents and carers are invited to this.
    • Writer’s workshops.
    • Drama activities led by qualified performers.
    • Potion making and other ‘spooky’ activities to stimulate pupils’ ideas for writing.
    • A closing assembly at 2.45 - parents and carers are invited to this.

Over the course of the day, pupils will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of ‘Spook’s Apprentice’, which has been signed by the author Joseph Delaney. The books are aimed at very confident Year Four readers and above; they will be sold for £6.00 per copy.

All pupils are being asked to come to school on Friday 3rd March dressed as their favourite spooky book character/villain. We are asking for a £2.70 donation towards the day, which must be in school by Monday 27th February 2017. If sufficient funds are not raised, the workshops will have to be cancelled.

    Yours faithfully,

    Mrs Hannah Whitehall

    Assistant Head

  • Mrs Dring's Leaving Assembly

    Fri 10 Feb 2017

Mrs Dring, headteacher at St Andrews CE Infant School said goodbye today for the last time. She will be starting at another school after half term. Mrs Dring has been at the school for 7 years and was the headteacher to all our children at Woodlea. A group of children were asked to attend her special assembly. The children shared some of their memories, wrote a poem and performed it to the children, staff and friends of St Andrews.

Everyone at Woodlea would like to thank Mrs Dring for all the help, support and guidance that she has given to all the children during her time there.

  • Near Miss Letter re Road Traffic

    Mon 06 Feb 2017

St Andrew's CE Infant School and Woodlea Junior School

    Road Safety - Near Misses

    Dear Parents and Carers,

We would like to thank you for your cooperation with parking at the start and end of the school day. The parking signs provided by the police have helped to make the area safer and alleviate morning congestion to some degree, but Woodlea Road still presents challenges at these times, including the speed at which some cars travel.

Last week there was a near miss, involving a car and a child from Woodlea Junior School. Last month too, a similar incident occurred with a child from St Andrew’s CE Infant school, where a car was using the school drive as a turning point.

There are limited parking spaces outside the entrance to both schools. Please try to avoid Woodlea Road and use the available public parking spaces around school rather than trying to park directly outside. These are the Civic Centre, Tesco and The Leisure Centre. By doing this you will help to ensure our children are safer and stop potential accidents happening.

If you do not use a car to transport your child(ren) to school please ensure you supervise them adequately, particularly in the area outside school.

If your child is at Woodlea Junior School and walks to school unsupervised, please remind them of Road Safety, which will complement the awareness sessions which have already taken place in school.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation,

Mrs C Dring (Headteacher at St Andrew’s CE Infant School)

Mrs Shorrocks (Headteacher at Woodlea Junior School)

  • Year 6 - Clitheroe Castle Letter

    Wed 01 Feb 2017

Year 6 trip to Clitheroe Castle

    Dear Parent/Carer,

We have organised a trip to Clitheroe Castle for year 6 on Friday February 24th.

The trip is to support the children’s learning next half term when we will be learning about the events surrounding the Norman invasion of Britain in 1066.

Whilst at the castle, the children will take part in a series of workshops to help them better understand the topic. The workshops include:

    • Exploring the battles leading up to and including the Battle of Hastings through drama and

    re-enactment.

    • Handling replica weapons, armour and equipment of a Norman, Saxon and Viking warrior.
    • Investigating the defensive structures shown in the construction of Clitheroe Castle.
    • Exploring the importance of armour in protecting ‘Sir Egbert’ from a big drop!

Travel will be by coach (Holmeswood coaches) leaving school at 9:10am and returning to school by 3:10pm.

We are asking for contributions towards the cost of the trip (including workshops and travel) of £9.30 to be paid by Tuesday 21st February. If sufficient donations are not raised, the visit will not take place.

Your child will require a ‘disposable’ packed lunch. If your child is in receipt of free school meals, they will be supplied with a school packed lunch (please indicate on the tear off slip if you would prefer your child to bring a packed lunch from home)

Many thanks for your continued support,

Mr. Payne, Mrs. Whitehall and Mrs. Strickland
