  • Woodlea Sport's Day

    Mon 06 Jul 2015
Woodlea Sports Day – Monday 6th July 2015
The sun was shining, the equipment all set up, the children, parents and staff all ready to start …
There were 22 activities set up, ranging from ‘Tin Can Alley’, ‘Hockey Dribbling’, ‘Netball Shooting’ to the more traditional ‘Obstacle Race’ and ‘Sprints’.
Giving the children the responsibility in choosing the order in which they could complete the activities and also who they wanted to go round with, proved a success.  The children had just over an hour to complete as many of the activities as possible. At each event there was an adult who awarded points or placings – depending on the activity completed.
The morning culminated with sprint races for boys and girls for the uppers and lowers and an ‘Egg and Spoon Race’ with REAL eggs!
For those relatives brave enough, they were invited to take part in an adult sprint race, which the children loved. The teachers too were invited to take part in a race, supported by all the children in school.
The morning in general was a great success.
Thank you to Mr Cook for his organisation and all the staff who helped with the activities.

  • Father's Day Lunch

    Fri 19 Jun 2015

Today at Woodlea, all Dads, Uncles and Grandads were invited into school to have their lunch with their children, nephews or grandchildren.
There were a lot of men who did come and eat in school. It is always nice to see the support from outside school. The children always like to have relatives in school, particularly to help celebrate Fathers Day.

Thank you to everyone who did come into school and have their lunch.

  • Woodlea's Thursday Picnic

    Thu 04 Jun 2015
Today was the start of 'Woodlea's Thursday Picnics'. The sun was out and the children were all excited for the first of many this half term.
All the children had the choice to buy a picnic lunch or they could eat their own sandwiches, brought in from home.
It was great to see the children outside, particularly because the sun was shining. They ate their picnics with friends from across the school and continued to play games until the end of lunch.
Lets hope that the weather next Thursday is as good as today.

  • British Week

    Fri 22 May 2015
Woodlea Junior School – British Week
During the last week at Woodlea Junior School, the children have had a British Week. They have been looking at all things ‘British’; the culture, landmarks, traditions, monarchy and British Values.
The children were asked to complete some homework with their parents. The variety and quality of this has been of a very high standard and their imagination has shown no limits. There has been some wonderful pieces brought into school – ranging from sculpture, art work, ICT to models of ‘The Coronation Crown’. A parent commented that they had thoroughly enjoyed working with their child at home and said that they too had learnt more about ‘British Values’ in society today.
As part of the week, the year 6 children had a visit from a ‘Community Court’, where they had an opportunity to participate in a mock trial, playing the various roles of the court officials.
Traditional British sports and their rules were taught including cricket, lawn tennis and rugby. Groups of children looked at and researched landmarks from around the British Isles, using maths sessions and co-ordinates to locate them.
The children have produced fact files, newspaper reports, poetry and leaflets which contain much of the new learning taken place during the week.
The week culminated with the children wearing red, white and blue. They performed and shared in a special assembly, which parents were invited to, some of the work from during the week. The climax of which was the children’s performance of ‘The National Anthem’. Mrs Strickland said, ‘I was really pleased with the respectful way in which the children sang the National Anthem’.
The highlight of the week for the children and staff was a ‘Street Party’, which was indoors, due to the weather. All the children had a party lunch and ate together, listening to British music and celebrating the week.
Mrs Shorrocks was very proud of all of the children during the week and the way in which they fully immersed in their new learning.
